Biography

Guillaume Apollinaire (his real name was Wilhelm Apollinaris Kostrowitsky) was a poet of the avant-garde movement in France at the turn of the 20th century. He published Alcools in 1913, a collection in which he erased all punctuation and presented modern imagery using classical forms and breaks. His use of calligrams created bold, poetic conversations between typography and his subjects. At the age of 38, Appollinaire succumbed to the flu.
