Biography

The English poet Charlotte Mew experienced a great deal of tragedy in her childhood, losing most of her six younger siblings to death or debilitating mental illness. Her first book of poetry, The Farmer’s Bride, came out in 1916 and was well regarded by many of the most important writers of her time, such as Ezra Pound and Virginia Woolf. Her life continued to be marked by tragedy however and she committed suicide in 1928.
